Former Governor of Sikkim and a veteran BJP leader V Rama Rao passed away on 17 January 2016 after prolonged illness. He was 81 and admitted at the city hospital in Hyderabad where he breathed his last. A lawyer by profession, Rao was one of the prominent leaders of Bharatiya Jan Sangh which later re-formed as the Bharatiya Janata Party. In his long political life he also served as the Governor of Sikkim in 2002. He is survived by his wife and a son.
V Rama Rao was born on 12 December 1935 near Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh in a Telugu Brahmin family. A successful lawyer he practiced at the Andhra Pradesh High Court and was active in trade union litigations. A lawyer by profession, he joined the Jana Sangh in 1956. During his long eventful political career he served the party on various capacities. A known face of united Andhra Pradesh he was elected for a record four times in a row to the AP Legislative Council during 1966 t0 1984 from the Hyderabad Graduates Constituency. He served as a Party Floor Leader in council during his last term. He was held high in both state and national politics.
Rise of V Rama Rao in National Politics
Being one of the important members he made valuable contribution propagating the ideals of the party. During his tenure as State Unit President for Andhra Pradesh for two consecutive terms (1993-2001) he brought numerous changes that helped the party to connect with the grass root level. A soft-spoken leader he also serves as Party National Vice President (2002 - 2007). A senate member of Osmania University Rama Rao did all to promote the Telegu culture beyond the borders of Andhra Pradesh. During later part of his life he served as Governor of Sikkim from 2002 to 2007.
Illness and Death
Suffering from severe lung infection he died at Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad on 17 January 2016. Rama Rao was 81 and is survived by wife and a son.

Leaders of both Telengana and Andhra Pradesh were shocked to hear about the demise of veteran leader V Rama Rao. Many including Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Seetharaman, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N.Chandrababu Naidu expressed their grief over the death of Rao and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family members.

Many retired judges and others too paid homage to the departed soul.
